ORLANDO, FLA. -- Botulinum toxin A, when injected into the external sphincter or bladder walls, allows some chronically incontinent patients to regain bladder control for up to 6 months, Dr. Michael Chancellor reported at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association.
The injections are useful for patients who have voiding dysfunctions that stem from sphincter spasticity, including those with multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury stroke, and overactive bladder and interstitial cystitis, said Dr. Chancellor, a urology surgeon m Pittsburgh.
Botulinum toxin A (Botox) can also be injected into the bladder wall to help alleviate some of the pain associated with bladder spasms, he said.
"This is nature's most perfect, poison, but it is also a robust drug that has applications far beyond the cosmetic use for which it is known," Dr. Chancellor said in a press conference describing his 3-year experience in treating lower urinary tract dysfunctions with the neurotoxin.
