Cimarron High Is One of State's Best
It's an exemplary school by the State Department of Education's account.
Ranchers, custodians and a Methodist church give food, time and care to keep Cimarron High School one of the best schools in the state.
"There's just a legacy here," Principal Penny Coppedge said. "It's what we do."
Besides Cimarron, the school's 133 students hail from Maxwell, Miami, Eagle Nest, Red River, Black Lake, Springer and Espanola. Fifty-three percent of the students are Hispanic.
Yellow school buses stop shy of the towns outside the Cimarron Municipal School District. Yet parents will drive as much as an hour to get their children to the bus stop in Eagle Nest.
