WE NEVER SAW HIM IN THE flesh and did't know what he looked like. We hardly knew anything about him. But we loved him, anyway.
The phenom.
He's hope. He's here.
This time, his name was Mark Prior. A new Cubs pitcher who made his major league debut last May 22 at Wrigley Field against Pittsburgh. Prior's job was simply to show promise, blaze one fastball, maybe win one game.
Also, save the manager's job, and the general manager's, save a season, win a pennant, make us forget about any personal problems, and generally boost morale, not to mention lower our handicap, straighten out our kids, and maybe find us a parking spot.
"Mark is the real deal," said Tom House, a longtime major league pitching coach who worked privately with Prior for years. "Of the hard throwers, he's right up there with the (Nolan) Ryans, (Roger) Clemenses."
Yes, the phenom is always subject to comparison. Cubs fans have seen that for decades. The most recent phenom, Kerry Wood, was also held up to Ryan and Clemens.
