Pitchers Mark Mulder (19-7), Tim Hudson (15-9) and Barry Zito (23-5) had successful seasons in 2002 and are widely acknowledged to be Oakland's most valuable assets and the game's best starting trio in the major leagues.
The talented threesome sat down earlier in the 2002 season with San Francisco Chronicle writer Susan Slusser to discuss various topics.
Susan Slusser: When do the three of you first remember seeing the others?
Mark Mulder: The first time I saw Huddy was at (former Triple-A affiliate) Vancouver. I thought, "Damn, he's little!"
Tim Hudson: He thought, "What a skinny S.O.B.!" Zito was a bonus baby, so we first saw him when they brought him in to work out with the big league club.
I wasn't a first-round guy. I think I was lucky to get a plane ticket when they called me up.
SS: You are always discussed in group form now, The Big Three. Does that bother you?
