THE RECORD IS GAUDY, DOMINANT and seemingly much too good to be true. If this bottom line belonged to Randy Johnson or Curt Schilling, Greg Maddux or Pedro Martinez, it simply would be their latest example of veteran excellence.

Consider the won-lost record, 19-9 this season and 33-12 during the past two years. That's 33-12 lifetime--a .733 winning percentage--in 53 career starts, which aren't enough to earn any pitcher veteran status in the major leagues.
