Come to my neighborhood--the Upper East Side of Manhattan--any weekend this summer and you might think that the neutron bomb had been dropped. The streets are so empty that I have sometimes toyed with the idea of buying a car just so that I can get a parking space. Where is everyone? And why am I not there? They are in the Hamptons or Northeast Harbor or Tuscany, or perhaps they are stuck in a car or an airport trying to get to one of those places. I am not in their company because New York minus New Yorkers and their cars is an exceedingly joyous town. Also, I don't own a second house. Or a first house, but that's beside the point.
