Hired by a female co-owner who wants to open doors for women, Ashley McElhiney will be the first female head coach of a men's professional basketball team. She'll coach the Nashville Rhythm, an expansion team in the American Basketball Association made up of NBA former players and hopefuls, who start play in November.
With no experience in coaching, the 22-year-old McElhiney turned down the job two months ago. After working as an entry-level media analyst for Ohio State's women's team, she had a change of heart.
"I was constantly thinking about 'What if?' I don't want to go through life passing up chances," she said. "That's the thing people regret, chances they don't take. And this is obviously a huge chance. It's going to be a challenge, and I look forward to it."
