The sad reality is any attempt to pin it on him or the grocer from Switzerland is passing the buck. The truth is England's hopes have been founded on myth.

The first of these is the fanciful notion that Sven-Goran Eriksson has improved the national side. Tactically naive, fatally negative and possessing the charisma of a stuffed trout, the Swede has been lucky to have the best crop of young players we have had for years.
