What makes a Pinoy, Pinoy? There may be some answers found to that question during a month-long series of events at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and the UP Film Institute.
An international conference, lectures and workshops, art shows and a film festival mark the Philippines' first multi-level exploration of the Filipino psyche. It celebrates the unity and fusion of Filipino knowledge, putting the traditional at par with the academic while challenging the borders between art and science, the seen and the unseen in Pagkataong Filipino: Looking for the Filipino among the Filipinos.
Entitled "Pagkataong Filipino: Looking for the Filipino among the Filipinos," the thrust of its events lie in the recognition of the importance of the self-image of a people. This theory of Pagkataong Filipino as pioneered by Dr. Virgilio Enriquez, maintains that despite centuries of external domination, Filipino culture bearers have kept the unique systemic outlook of their ancestors: their inclusive sense of personhood gravitates toward the Pinoy core value kapwa - the shared Self.
