Budapest, June 24, 2004 (MTI-ECONEWS) - The EU committee in charge of VAT affairs has put off discussing Hungary's simplified business tax (EVA) at its meeting on June 29, Finance Ministry spokesman Ferenc Pichler told MTI on Thursday.

The committee gave no reason for the postponement, nor did it request additional information on the tax. Mr Pichler said that Hungary had already sent, at Brussels' request, information on the tax which, EU officials allege, generates less revenue than does the standard VAT, thereby violating EU competition rules.
