The South African a cappella vocal music tradition known as isicathamiya developed among mine workers who would sing together in their barracks after work. This style of singing eventually coalesced into a recognizable regional genre, the most famous exponent of which is the ten-voice ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo, led by Joseph Shabalala. Ladysmith Black Mambazo came to international attention in 1986 when the group was featured prominently on Paul Simon's successful Graceland album (Warner Brothers, 9 25447-2 [CD]). American and European listeners were entranced by the ensemble's unique sound, which manages somehow simultaneously to be both robust (due to the large number of male voices involved) and ethereal (due to the prominence of falsetto singers in the group).
