Saxophonist Joel Frahm teams up with pianist Brad Mehldau for this quietly impressive survey of jazz standards, all of them performed by the duo without a rhythm section or further accompaniment of any kind. Given the instrumentation, one might expect that the selections would lean toward ballads, but they are in fact quite evenly divided between slow and up-tempo numbers. The album opens with a gently heartfelt rendition of the Billie Holiday classic "Don't Explain," following which Mehldau and Frahm offer a rollicking take on the Harold Arlen potboiler "Get Happy" (which features a particularly impressive solo by Mehldau) and a stately but powerful version of Sonny Rollins's "Oleo." The album's high point comes on the fourth track, which may be the first truly interesting arrangement ...
