SAN FRANCISCO -- Automatically presuming that a premenopausal woman with anemia just needs iron supplements might be a mistake.
Perhaps 20% of premenopausal women with anemia may have a bleeding ulcer, erosive esophagitis, or another gastrointestinal condition, Dr. Bryan Greene said in a poster presentation at the annual Digestive Disease Week.
Dr. Greene and Dr. Don C. Rockey, both of Duke University Durham, N.C., reviewed records for 111 premenopausal women who were referred for endoscopy with the sole indication being iron-deficient anemia (hemoglobin less than 12 g/dL and ferritin less than 20 [micro]g/L).
