Premenopausal women treated with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist for 6 months had a uniform loss of bone mineral density regardless of their age in a retrospective review of a large study population, reported Dr. Sanjay K. Agarwal of the University of California, Los Angeles.

This finding suggests that treatments that reduce bone mineral density may be most harmful if given to women before they attain their peak bone mineral density. For this reason, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists should be used with caution in women below the age of peak bone mineral density, Dr. Agarwal said (J. Reprod. Med. 47[7]:530-34, 2002).
