SAN FRANCISCO -- Empiric use of 0.75% metronidazole vaginal gel does not increase the reversion rate of minimally abnormal Pap smears, said Dr. Jeanne Ferrante at the annual spring conference of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
There is a lack of consensus about the best way to manage mildly abnormal Pap smears, said Dr. Ferrante, who conducted the study while in the department of family practice at the University of South Florida, Tampa. Recent guidelines address management of patients with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions but do not deal with inflammation, benign cellular changes, or reactive cellular changes (JAMA 287[16]:2120-29, 2002).
