Vulvar vestibulitis may be a significant side effect of some oral contraceptives, reported Dr. Celine Bouchard and her associates at the Hopital du Saint-Sacrement du Centre in Quebec City, Que.
Preliminary evidence from a study of 138 women with vulvar vestibulitis also indicated that some oral contraceptives are associated with a high risk of the disorder, while others are tied to a lower risk (Am. J. Epidemiol. 156[3]:254-61, 2002).
The study also included 309 women who served as controls. The analysis focused on oral contraceptive use before symptoms of vestibular pain first appeared among the cases; among the controls, the analysis focused on oral contraceptive use during the prior 12 months.
The researchers cautioned that their findings should be considered preliminary, because only a small number of women in the study used oral contraceptives.
