Approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hyperemesis in pregnancy in the 1950s, Bendectin's effectiveness made it a very popular drug. An estimated 30 million patients used Bendectin during the more than two decades the drug was on the market. Then came a tabloid story claiming Bendectin was associated with birth defects in thousands of babies.
The manufacturer spent more than $100 million defending the subsequent personal injury lawsuits, winning courtroom victories in the great majority. Because of the expense and bad publicity, however, Merrell Dow withdrew Bendectin from the U.S. market in 1983. A generic version remains available in Canada and other countries.
