With the release of Gone Again, punk's original poster girl, Patti Smith, is back with a vengeance-and not a minute too soon. Thanks to a rock press now obsessed with the origins of punk, her legend was beginning to overshadow her music.

A fixture in the New York underground (Smith was romantically involved with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe), Smith released four albums between 1975 and '79 and garnered a Top 20 hit with her cover of Bruce Springsteen's Because The Night.
