IN HIS Australia Twice Traversed, the unusually recalcitrant and solitary explorer Ernest Giles details with consummate skill his often ill-fated expeditions into the western deserts during the years 1872-76. At the close of the journals he stakes a somewhat humble claim for himself in the history of Australian exploration. "Though I shall not attempt to rank myself," Giles writes, "amongst the first or greatest, yet I think I have reason to call myself, the lost of the Australian explorers."
