UNTIL RECENTLY most university vice-chancellors were appointed to the same retiring age as professors, apart from the Australian National University where vice-chancellors were appointed for seven years only. Before 1980 the two exceptions were Dr Priestley, the first Vice-Chancellor of Melbourne, appointed in 1935, who objected to the Chancellor's interference in executive matters and returned to England after two years' and Mr A.P.
