"Smile brighter," promises a TV commercial for Trident White. The label for the sugarless gum claims it "whitens teeth," but can an 89 cent pack of gum do that? Even if the evidence from the unpublished manufacturer-funded study is taken at face value, it takes an awful lot of chewing (80 minutes a day for weeks) for a minor amount of tooth cleansing.
According to the gum's maker, Cadbury Adams, Trident White contains sodium stearate, a surface stain remover. (it also contains a milk-derived ingredient that Cadbury Adams said people with milk allergies should avoid.) The company provided CONSUMER REPORTS with a summary of the July 2000 clinical trial it funded, but declined to identify which university conducted the study or the exact number of participants.
