If you've chosen real wood for your deck, it will need regular protective treatment to maintain its appearance. Our tests show that the longest-lasting and thus most economical treatments are opaque. They hide wood grain like a coat of paint.

Next-best are semitransparent treatments, which contain a small amount of pigment. Clear treatments, which include several widely available brands, are the least effective type.

You can expect the best products in the Ratings to have picked up only a little dirt, remain close to their original color, and protect the wood from cracking. The worst become unsightly and their protection is compromised in as little as a year.
