The death of a 19-month-old girl and injuries to four people have prompted the recall of 592,000 Sauder TV/VCR carts because they could easily tip, causing the TV set to fall onto anyone nearby.
The recall involves models 2655 and 2755, which were sold from January 1993 to December 1999 at discount and home-electronics stores nationwide for about $100. The manufacturer, Sauder Woodworking, has received 13 reports of carts tipping over. Besides the fatal injury to the North Wales, Pa., child, a second child sustained a broken skull but recovered: two other children and an adult sustained bumps and bruises.
Sold as ready-to-assemble kits, the rolling carts came in a light-colored oak or dark cherry finish. They have a top shell to support a set with a maximum 27-inch screen, a middle shelf to hold a VCR, and a lower shelf to hold tapes and equipment.
