As summer begins and Americans hit the road, gas prices are an average of 15 percent higher than they were a year ago. Short of buying a more fuel-efficient hybrid car like the Toyota Prius or the Honda Civic Hybrid, or a gas-engine car with high mpg, you can take several steps to lighten the dent that gas prices make in your budget:
Get going. Don't let the car sit and "warm up" after it's Started; engines warm up faster while you're driving. Shut off the engine if you have to wait more than half a minute for someone.
Be smooth. Steady driving makes best use of your fuel. Avoid hard acceleration or braking. Keep your speed reasonable--gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.
