Hopes emerged yesterday for a new relationship between the Hong Kong and central governments and the pro-democracy camp after senior officials expressed optimism over the democrats' moves to mend rifts.

Lau Siu-kai, head of the Central Policy Unit - a top adviser to Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa - said improving the relationship was now a "top priority", while a senior mainland official welcomed the democrats' gesture.
