IT HAS BEEN A LONG-HELD OPINION IN THIS CORNER THAT COMMON SENSE should prevail in game situations during which pitchers are warned about throwing at batters.
In the past season, these warnings seemed to emerge quite frequently in major league play, and while they were based on the commendable goal of preventing bodily harm to hitters, they were issued with little regard to an ancient precept of effective pitching.
That precept gives the pitcher the right to drive batters back if they hang over or stand too close to the plate.
