MIAMI BEACH -- Retroareolar breast cysts appear quite commonly in teenagers and should be watched for signs of abscess and infection, Dr. Andrea Huneeus said at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology
"There is very little in the literature about this phenomenon, but we have been noticing more and more of these cysts, once we started looking for them," said Dr. Huneeus, who presented her study in a prize-winning poster presentation at the meeting.
The study included 40 adolescent girls, aged 10-20 years, who were diagnosed with retroareolar cysts over the course of a 2-year period.
Forty percent of the girls were asymptomatic and diagnosed with a palpable breast nodule during a routine visit. The remaining girls presented with acute mastalgia, retroareolar inflammation, and abscesses, said Dr. Huneeus, chief of the adolescent ob.gyn. unit at Clinica Alemana, Santiago, Chile.
