ROTO RAP ROB HURTT
"Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."
It's apparent from Crash Davis' "political" views that this Bull Durham character didn't dabble in fantasy baseball. If he did, Davis would feel as strongly about strikeouts as he did about high fiber and good Scotch. Fantasy owners take outs any way they can get them, but they crave that added bonus from Ks.
Though it will take a blockbuster trade to add Randy Johnson or Jason Schmidt to your roster, younger strikeout artists can be had for less. They might even be floating on your waiver wire.
Ben Sheets, RHP, Brewers. Sheets will not be as easily attainable after his 18-strikeout performance against the Braves, but a handful of owners might consider trading him while his value is at its peak. The thing is, it isn't. Sheets will stay near the top of the league in strikeouts all season.
Oliver Perez, LHP, Pirates. The knock against Perez has been lack of command. He struck out 56 and walked 16 in his first eight starts, so that concern has disappeared quicker than a hanging curveball. His fastball/slider combination keeps hitters off-balance.
Rich Harden, RHP, A's. Harden has struck out nearly a batter an inning this season after fanning 67 in 74 2/3 innings as a rookie. This kid could have the best stuff of anyone in Oakland. Tim Hudson says so.
