In the world of sports, there is no shortage of axioms to describe the benefits of good defense. For example, it always beats good offense. Or, sometimes, it's the best offense. It never rests. It wins championships.
It is hereby submitted that there is no more marvelous a phrase in all of sports than the one that has been uttered by millions of fans at thousands of sporting events, inspired by the hand-held signs of smiling cheerleaders and the bright lights of the Jumbotron: "DEE-FENSE!" they chant. "DEE-FENSE!" Simple and elegant.
