In Britain early silver is rare. Some three hundred pieces survive from before 1530, about half preserved by the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge universities. But these evocative objects are rarely visible even to current students, and their origins and functions are often obscure. An exhibition of silver from Oxford colleges, soon to open at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford, is a unique celebration of social history, patronage, and craftsmanship.
