HENRIETTA GARDNER MACY (1854-1927), a sculptor and teacher, was born in Decatur, Illinois. She studied at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and taught kindergarten in Boston before leaving for Europe in the 1880s. She was a correspondent in Europe for the Brooklyn Eagle, Punch, and the Pall Mall Gazette. She settled in Venice, where she lived for nearly forty years until her death. Macy ran a school for poor children in Murano, Italy, and created casts of works of art, which she sold to tourists. Her model of the Palazzo Ducale in Venice is housed in the North End Branch of the Boston Public Library.
