The Meissen porcelain manufactory was established in Meissen near Dresden in 1710 by Augustus II (the Strong) of Poland, who was also elector of Saxony. In 1697 Augustus had been elected king of Poland, but lost the throne in 1706. Czar Peter I (the Great) helped him regain it in 1709, and in gratitude Augustus sent the czar a number of gifts including examples of porcelain produced by the royal factory. Peter visited Dresden more than once, which led to more presents being exchanged. Over the next decade or so, many members of the Russian imperial family received offerings from a grateful Augustus. In return, Catherine II ordered from the Meissen manufactory seventeen large porcelain figural groups showing scenes from Greek and Roman mythology. ...
