This year the Royal Horticultural Society in London marks its bicentenary. It was founded as the Horticultural Society of London to collect information about plants and to encourage improvements in horticultural practices. Among the seven gentlemen who gathered on March 7, 1804, to form the organization were John Wedgwood, the son of Josiah, and James Hatchard, above whose bookshop in Piccadilly the meeting was held. From those modest beginnings the society has grown to a membership of about 340,000. It owns and operates four gardens, the Lindley Library, and eighteen annual flower shows, the most famous of which is the Chelsea Flower Show held in London each May.
