Chinese card vendor Watchdata System plans to introduce its first SIM card running Java Card software later this year. It would make Beijing-based Watchdata the first Chinese card supplier offering Java Card, which is designed to allow card issuers to more easily buy their cards and applications from multiple vendors.

Although Java Card has found its way onto more than 500 million smart cards worldwide, mainly subscriber identity module cards for mobile phones issued over the past six years, don't expect a rush to Java Card in China, the world's largest SIM card market.
