Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has had its back to the wall since a series of cover-ups of defective auto parts and failures to recall vehicles came to light. Observers say the carmaker with the three-diamond logo has a long way to go to regain consumers' trust.

On Wednesday, MMC admitted that its cover-up of defective parts was more widespread than it first reported, and that it failed to recall about 160,000 vehicles of 17 models produced from 1992 to 1997, including the popular Gallant and Pajero models.
