Okay, fellow food fabs, time for a history lesson. The year is 1989 and the Great Oat Rush is in full roar. A series of groundbreaking nutritional studies have demonstrated the benefits of oat bran and, specifically glucans, in improving serum lipid profiles and reducing coronary heart disease risks. This sparks an explosion of new product development. Food companies and kitchen entrepreneurs alike are rushing to capitalize on consumers' new grail of nutrition and health--oat bran. Sales of Quaker brand oatmeal are surging.
