It's an enchanting land where every stone has its tale to tell. History unravels an interesting anecdote of how the city derived its name. According to legends, Suraj Sen, the Rajput chieftain of the 8th century, lost his way while hunting in the wooded hills around Gwalior. Parched and tired, he cantered into an isolated hillside where he came across a venerable old man, Sage Gwalipa, who guided him to a 'kund'. Much to his surprise, after drinking the healing waters of the pond, Suraj Sen was cured of his longtime ailment -leprosy.
