SEOUL, June 1 Asia Pulse - A senior aide to President Roh Moo-hyun will fly to Geneva Monday to attend an annual assembly of the International Labor Organization (ILO), a Cheong Wa Dae official said Tuesday.
Kwon Jae-chul, presidential secretary for labor affairs, will attend the ILO meeting along with Labor Minister Kim Dae-hwan and representatives of South Korea's labor and management to help enhance the country's international image, the official said.
Labor unrest has been cited as one of the biggest obstacles to foreign investment in Korea.
Kwon's decision to visit Geneva came just one day after a Cheong Wa Dae meeting presided over by President Roh Moo-hyun in which participants in the tripartite commission of labor, management and government agreed to reconvene the forum.
They also concurred on allowing representatives of small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and non-regular workers to join the discussions to produce effective solutions to the ongoing economic slump.
During Monday's meeting, Roh proposed that representatives of the tripartite commission hold a fresh round of meetings to help it function more effectively.
The commission was launched in January 1998 as a presidential advisory body with the country's two umbrella groups, the Korean Federation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, representing labor.
