Byline: Construction of facilities has already started near Newcastle and Orkney, writes Martyn Wingrove

OFFSHORE renewable energy developments are already big business when it comes to building wind farms off the coast of Europe, but little has been done to develop an industry around the potential energy generation from tidal and wave resources.

The UK, in particular, has made the right moves for developing a large offshore wind energy industry over the past five years, with the first major project at North Hoyle up and running since the first quarter of this year.

Tidal and wave energy sectors have needed to take a back seat to wind, as wind turbine technology is more advanced and fully commercialised.

Now the UK has a 'route map' for developing the tidal and wave energy sectors with three research facilities in the pipeline.

British Maritime Technology's renewables division is heavily involved in pushing forward the planning and building of three research centres to push industry designs into commercial realities.
