FERRY safety in the Baltic and North seas is still higher than in the Mediterranean, the latest evaluation from German motoring association ADAC revealed, writes Katrin Berkenkopf in Cologne.

All 13 ferries included in the study operating in the North or Baltic Seas were awarded good or very good grades. Of the 21 ferries in the Mediterranean, though, six were found merely satisfactory and two very poor.

The worst performer in the test was the 12,523 gt ferry Flaminia,built in 1981. The ship is operated by Tirrenia on the route between Civitavecchia and Olbia'Sardinia. ADAC claimed, among other factors, that the crew was badly trained and safety information was ...
