INVESTIGATIONS into the death of OOCL executive Courtenay Allan last summer has taken a new twist, with the intervention of the Foreign Office.

Mr Allan died after plunging down a lift shaft on the Hong Kong-flag containership OOCL Montrealwhen it was berthed in Le Havre.

The Essex coroner, who has agreed to hold an inquest into the fatality, has asked the Foreign Office for assistance in obtaining the French police accident report and also the conclusions of the Hong Kong Marine Department.

Foreign Office help in such circumstances where there are several jurisdictions involved is not unusual.

The UK government department is effectively acting as 'a postbox', a spokeswoman explained.
