EVER WONDER why the monsoon rains stopped two weeks after the rainy season started?

The country is experiencing "monsoon breaks" or brief dry periods that occur during the May to September rainy season, the weather bureau said yesterday.

Monsoon breaks occur when the high pressure area in the Northern Pacific strengthens and results in the weakening of the southwest monsoon (hanging habagat), according to Nathaniel Cruz, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's weather branch.
