(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
Byline: Nestor U. Torre
A READER writes, "I think the Philippine movie industry is no longer in the ICU, it is already dead! Just imagine, there are weeks when there are no new Filipino films showing in our theaters? If it's not dead, I don't know what is."
Well, those are fighting words-especially to our movie people, who are working so hard just to keep their heads above water, to prove that there's life in our grievously ailing industry still.
Instead of getting irritated, however, we simply remember that, in the 1950s, some very famous people were also bewailing the "demise" of the local movie industry. That was 50 years ago, and yet Filipino films continue to be made!
A lot fewer are being produced, we admit, but last year's output of around 70 is still more than what other Asian countries make, with the exception of India and China.
So, there's life to the old Pinoy pelikula yet, and we shouldn't waste our energies crying over its "demise." Instead, let's work hard together to help improve its fortunes this year.
