THEY watched like hawks, vowing to fight every inch of the way, as Congress opened yesterday the canvassing of election results to find out who will rule the country for the next six years.
In an unprecedented move, opposition lawmakers even climbed the rostrum to see how Senate President Franklin Drilon and Speaker Jose de Venecia opened the first of 223 ballot boxes containing the vote tallies to be tabulated by a special 22-man canvassing panel.
"This has never happened before," Deputy Speaker Raul Gonzalez said as he watched opposition legislators stand side by side with Drilon and De Venecia.
De Venecia defended his decision to designate an administration-dominated House panel to the canvassing committee, pledging a fair, transparent canvass.
"They were appointed because they're familiar with election laws," De Venecia said from the rostrum. "They're not here to act as partisans or agents of candidates. They're here to perform a constitutional duty as members of the National Board of Canvassers."
