THE PROGRESS of technology has made it easier to produce higher-quality counterfeit money right at home, as seen in the recent raid of two houses in Valenzuela that yielded computer and printing equipment plus P600,000 worth of fake bills bearing the fluorescent markers that show up under ultraviolet light.
The raid was conducted over the weekend by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation's Anti-Fraud and Computer Crime Division and also resulted in the arrest of three people.
Nabbed in the raid were couple Rolando Pedrejas, 50, a meat and vegetable vendor, and his wife Arlene, 30, and Rodolfo Jabiguero, 47. All three reside at the raided house on Gen. T de Leon Street in Valenzuela. Jabiguero also owns the other raided house at Tamaraw Hills in Marulas.
All three, who have been charged with forging treasury or bank notes, denied involvement in the counterfeiting operations. Jabiguero told reporters that the Tamaraw Hills house was just rented from him by a certain "Alog" shortly before the elections.
The suspects also claimed they do not know how to use computers.
