BUTUAN CITY-Armed men swooped down on a popular beach resort and abducted a ranking environment official in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte early morning Sunday.
The abduction came three days after two Department Of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) executives were also abducted and later released in a remote village in Carmen, Surigao del Sur.
A lumad army claiming to be fighting for greater autonomy of tribal areas owned up responsibility for the spate of abductions saying it was part of its tribal war on erring environment officials.
Amu Kalasag, spokesperson of the Bungkatol Liberation Front (Bulif), said his group "arrested" Cristopher Kuizon, regional environment technical director for operations in the Caraga region, for crimes against the tribal people.
According to Kalasag, Kuizon was one of the 13 corrupt DENR men it found guilty of "prostituting" and "oppressing" their ancestral lands through massive illegal logging and tree plantations and mining.
