(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
NOT SO fast, Mr. Senator-elect.
Government prosecutors yesterday vowed to pursue corruption charges against Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada following his successful senatorial bid.
Jinggoy is free on bail after being charged as an accomplice of his father, deposed President Joseph Estrada, in the plunder of hundreds of millions from state coffers. The elder Estrada remains in detention.
"We are not affected by his making it to the Senate," chief special prosecutor Dennis Villa-Ignacio told reporters. "The proceedings will continue."
The Sandiganbayan allowed Jinggoy to post a P500,000 bail on March 6, 2003. Prosecutors have asked the Supreme Court to reverse this decision.
Villa-Ignacio said he was confident the high tribunal would cancel the bail and return the young Estrada to police custody. In short, Jinggoy could go ahead and take his venerable new seat-the first senator to assume the post while facing plunder charges-but he should not count on serving out his six-year term.
