CEBU CITY-When no one was looking, President Macapagal-Arroyo quietly flew into Cebu on Sunday night to rest and pray at the Carmelite Monastery, the same convent where Corazon Aquino and her daughter Kris sought refuge at the start of the people power revolt in February 1986.
The following morning Ms Macapagal met with Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal in the convent to seek his help in bringing about reconciliation after a hotly contested presidential election.
"It was a private meeting. She asked for prayers and advice," Vidal told the Inquirer in the convent after his meeting with the President.
The meeting between Ms Macapagal and Vidal, former spiritual adviser of deposed President Joseph Estrada, coincided with the publication of a statement, which said that "it is time for magnanimity and humility on the part of the winners, and humility and acceptance on the part of those who have not been favored with the people's mandate."
The statement was signed by Vidal, Jaime Cardinal Sin and Manila Archbishop Gaundencio Rosales, and several business groups, universities and NGOs.
