SEVEN United States-based tracksters show their wares against national athletes and a sprinkling of foreign campaigners today as the 2004 National Open Track and Field Championships fires off at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Three of the Fil-Ams, all eyeing berths in the national pool, are expected to come out strong in today's finals of the pole vault, sprints and 400-meter hurdles.
There is Deborah Samson, who is heavily favored to rule the pole vault. Samson holds the region's highwater mark of 4.12m, a good 17 cm. better than the SEAG record of 3.95 held by an Indonesian.
Gary Cablayan is back with an improved 51.55-second mark in the 400-meter hurdles. The Long Beach State University student topped the 1996 competition with a time of 53.20.
And there is 6-foot-1 Kashus Perona Jr., who boasts a 46.5-sec personal record in the 400m run, just a breath away off the 45.57 RP record of national head coach Isidro del Prado. Perona, a former standout of the California State University, ruled the California-Nevada Championships three years ago.
