IT TOOK 10 minutes to open the first ballot box. Hours later, 23 more were unsealed. 199 more to go.
At that pace, it may take Congress, now in joint session, anywhere from three to four days simply to open all the 223 ballot boxes containing the tallies of votes cast for president and vice president in the May 10 elections.
Only then will the actual canvassing of the votes begin.
Speaker Jose de Venecia's best hope is that, with minimum grandstanding by the lawmakers, the country will know in 10 to 15 days who its next president is.
Others predict the entire canvassing might take three weeks, at most.
